Position description

The Department of Biomolecular Engineering [https://www.soe.ucsc.edu/departments/biomolecular-engineering] at the University of California, Santa Cruz (UCSC) invites applications for the position of Research Specialist under the direction of Professor Todd Lowe. The Research Specialist will support and assist in research to sequence and experimentally study transfer RNAs from a range of prokaryotic and eukaryotic species in order to understand dynamics of tRNA expression and processing across different growth stages and cell types. The results of the tRNA sequencing will be analyzed, verified, and integrated into the Genomic tRNA Database for distribution to the tRNA research community.

Responsibilities will include microbial and mammalian cell culture; RNA and DNA isolation from a range of mammalian tissues (mostly human and mouse); library preparation for high-throughput sequencing; oversight and support of basic laboratory operations; molecular biology and biochemistry techniques (e.g. RT-PCR, quantitative PCR, gene disruption and introducing modified tRNA genes, growth media preparation, gel electrophoresis, northern blots, CAS9/CRISPR methods, and developing new/modified protocols in these areas, as needed); basic data analysis; biological interpretation of tRNA functional assays; and producing written reports of lab work to be incorporated into journal publications. Co-authorship on scientific publications is also anticipated, but dependent on contributions to various research projects.

The selected candidate will have experience in tissue culture and/or stem cell work, RNA research, and will have prior training in preparing high-throughput RNA or DNA sequencing libraries. We are particularly interested in applicants who possess strong verbal and written communications skills; one or more years of post-graduate academic or industry working experience; experience working independently; and the ability to interact and communicate effectively with both biologists and bioinformaticists within the team.
