The Department of Environmental Studies [https://envs.ucsc.edu/] at the University of California, Santa Cruz (UCSC) invites applications for the position of Postdoctoral Scholar in Ecology, under the direction of Christopher Wilmers and Heiko Wittmer (Victoria University of Wellington). Using existing data from GPS/VHF collared individuals from 2 previous research projects on mule and black-tailed deer in northern California to model 1) short- and long-term population dynamics including the possible effect of predators and landscape level changes in habitat availability, 2) habitat use and selection, and 3) individual movements and migrations. Modeling outcomes will be written up as peer-reviewed publications.
We are particularly interested in applicants with strong quantitative skills including previous experience in capture-mark-recapture methods and modeling population dynamics using R. Knowledge in ArcGIS or similar software is needed for the proposed analyses evaluating habitat use, selection, and individual deer movements and migrations. Evidence of strong written communication skills is essential.
