Position description

The Division of Graduate Studies (https://graddiv.ucsc.edu/) is accepting applications for the position of Associate Dean of Graduate Studies. The Associate Dean reports directly to the Vice Provost and Dean of Graduate Studies (VPDGS) and as a key member of the Graduate Division team provides administrative support in the areas of graduate program oversight and development and graduate student and postdoctoral scholar issues. This is a part-time (50%) fiscal year appointment.

RESPONSIBILITIES
Graduate program support, graduate student support, professional development, postdoctoral scholars, and internationalization

  • In collaboration with the VPDGS, provide leadership and Graduate Division coordination of efforts to expand professional development and placement for graduate students
  • Participate in Graduate Division efforts to increase graduate support and postdoctoral placement through training grants, individual fellowships, internships, and other relevant support opportunities
  • Provide collaborative leadership and Graduate Division coordination of efforts to expand support for postdoctoral scholars
  • Support Graduate Division efforts in internationalization, international recruitments, and international graduate agreements

Graduate planning and strategy

  • Meet regularly with Graduate Division executive team (VPDGS, Assistant Dean(s), Executive Assistant) and, as needed, with senior management in Planning and Budget, Office of Research, Academic Affairs, Division of Student Success, and other relevant units
  • Assist with planning and execution of graduate growth strategy
  • Help encourage new program development and other initiatives of strategic importance for graduate education at UCSC

Administration

  • Represent Graduate Division in department external reviews, Deans Advisory Council, Graduate Council, and other regular meetings, especially when the VPDGS must be absent
  • Manage, in collaboration with the VPDGS, academic appeals cases and disciplinary actions

SALARY
Commensurate with qualifications and experience.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS

  • Associate or Full Professor at UC Santa Cruz
  • Record of teaching and advising in graduate degree programs

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Experience as Department Graduate Director or member of department/program Graduate Committee
  • Experience supervising a significant number of graduate students
  • Experience on Academic Senate committees, especially Graduate Council
  • Experience with grant-funded research projects involving graduate students and/or postdoctoral scholars, and/or external graduate fellowship programs
  • Experience with diversity and inclusion among graduate students, postdocs, and graduate-related faculty and administrative staff
  • Experience with graduate program dynamics

POSITION AVAILABLE
July 1, 2019

DURATION OF POSITION
The initial appointment will be at fifty-percent time for a three-year term. Arrangements regarding teaching, course release, and compensation will be discussed with the Vice Provost and Dean of Graduate Studies.
