Position description

The Center for Biomolecular Sciences and Engineering (transitioning into the Genomics Institute Organized Research Unit at the University of California, Santa Cruz (UCSC) invites applications for the position of Junior Specialist, Evolution of Gene Regulatory Networks supervised by Dr. Sofie Salama. The Junior Specialist will work as part of a team to perform cell culture and molecular biology research experiments aimed at understanding the evolution and function of new gene regulatory networks that emerged recently in the human lineage and are derived from retrotransposons and KRAB Zinc Fingers. This research will involve culturing human and non-human primate pluripotent stem cell culture, RNA and protein isolation, and whole transcriptome sequencing library generation and analysis. In addition to performing research, the incumbent will support lab operations by assisting with ordering, chemical waste disposal, equipment maintenance and related functions. The candidate will also be expected to keep a detailed laboratory notebook and prepare written and oral reports describing research results. The candidate will be expected to learn new techniques and implement protocols, have strong attention to detail, strong written and verbal communication skills, exercise good time management and problem-solving skills, and work effectively in a team environment.

Commensurate with qualifications and experience.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s degree (or equivalent foreign degree) in biology, molecular biology, biochemistry, or a related discipline. It is expected that the degree requirement will completed by June 30, 2019.
  • At least one year of biological wet lab experience, including mammalian cell culture and molecular biology experiments, that was achieved while earning, or after obtaining, the degree.

POSITION AVAILABLE
July 1, 2019. Degree requirement must be completed by June 30, 2019 for employment effective July 1, 2019 and beyond.

DURATION OF POSITION
Initial appointment will be full‐time through June 30, 2020 with the possibility of reappointment. Should the hiring unit propose reappointment; a review to assess performance will be conducted. Reappointment is also contingent upon the availability of funding.
