The Coastal Science and Policy Program under the Division of Social Sciences and the Division of Physical and Biological Sciences at the University of California, Santa Cruz (UCSC) invites applications for an ongoing pool of part-time Lecturers who may be appointed to teach graduate level courses in coastal social sciences or coastal science and policy, including examining relationships and institutions relevant to sustainability issues and solutions, sociological theory, social change, and social inequality in the coastal zone. Applicants with expertise in coastal issues and cases, from watersheds to open ocean, and working with one or more of the following areas are strongly encouraged to apply: Social science methodologies and theory; sustainability solutions development and implementation; stakeholder engagement; collective action, resilience, and adaptive capacity in social-ecological systems; climate change; natural resource management (including human rights, social justice, and equity considerations); and/or coastal science and policy.

The campus is especially interested in candidates who can contribute to the diversity and excellence of the academic community through their teaching and other assigned duties.


Commensurate with qualifications and experience and the particular courses the Lecturer is appointed to teach.

Ph.D. (or equivalent foreign degree) in Biology, Ecology, Environmental Studies, Environmental Policy, Sociology, or Anthropology at the time of application and five years’ university-level teaching experience relevant to the advertised position.

Appointments are contingent on the hiring unit’s instructional need and the availability of funding. Appointments are typically made during one or more quarters of the regular academic year (fall, winter, and spring quarters).
