Position description

The Ares lab in the Molecular Cell and Developmental Biology Department at the University of California, Santa Cruz (UCSC) invites applications for the position of Assistant Project Scientist. Under the direction of Manny Ares, the Assistant Project Scientist will perform molecular genetic manipulations of yeast using CRISPR, and analyze splicing and ribosome biogenesis by a combination of in vivo and in vitro tests of splicing. The incumbent will be expected to make creative contributions to the design and execution of the project as well as contribute to writing publications that result from said project.

Applicants with the following areas of expertise are strongly encouraged to apply: Experience with using CRISPR to alter the yeast genome, preparing and testing yeast splicing extracts and analyzing ribosome biogenesis, and/or at least one year of experience with nanopore sequencing methods including direct RNA sequencing.

SALARY
Commensurate with qualifications and experience.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS

  • PhD (or equivalent foreign degree) in molecular biology, genetics, biochemistry, or bioengineering at the time of application
  • At least four years of postdoctoral research experience as a Postdoctoral Scholar
  • Experience using CRISPR, preparing and testing yeast splicing extracts, and analyzing ribosome biogenesis
  • Applicant must be a current UCSC employee

DURATION OF POSITION
Initial appointment will be full‐time for one year, with the possibility of reappointment. Should the hiring unit propose reappointment; a review to assess performance will be conducted. Reappointment is also contingent upon the availability of funding.
