The University Library at the University of California, Santa Cruz (UCSC) invites applications for the position of Scholarly Communication Librarian. Under the direction of the Head of Research Support Services, the Scholarly Communication Librarian will spearhead Library-wide efforts to: (1) advance alternatives to high-cost publishing models, including open access initiatives, and (2) provide scholarly publishing guidance and training to researchers and scholars, including guidance on copyright.
The University of California is actively engaged in efforts to transform scholarly publishing. We seek a collaborative, user-focused, creative, and motivated individual to help the UCSC Library shape our role as a leader in these efforts. The Scholarly Communication Librarian will help set the direction and scope of author services provided by the Library and lead efforts to develop a campus community of practice surrounding open access and scholarly communication. Working closely with the Research Support Services Librarians, the Associate University Librarian for Collections & Services, other library colleagues, and external stakeholders, the incumbent will:
- Provide training and guidance to authors in the following areas: navigating the scholarly publishing landscape, promoting the availability and accessibility of research outputs, and increasing research impact. Advise on author agreements and copyright.
- Establish and lead an internal advisory group to set collectively library goals and priorities to support new and open methods of scholarly publishing, pursue funding opportunities to expand existing resources, and coordinate outreach, messaging, and programming efforts to the campus community.
- Actively contribute as a member of the Research Support Services Department (RSS), which supports the Library's strategic priorities related to scholarly communication, research and teaching support, discovery, and collection development.
- Serve as the RSS Liaison to the Graduate Division, especially as it pertains to building scholarly communication literacies for graduate students and other early career researchers.
- Serve on University of California and campus-wide committees, working groups, and Library-wide teams.

Assistant or Associate Librarian
$55,014 – $84,260, commensurate with qualifications and experience.
- An ALA-accredited MLS or MLIS degree (or equivalent foreign degree) or a Juris Doctor. Degree requirement must be met at the time of application.
- Minimum of two years’ experience with providing guidance and support to researchers and scholars related to (a) scholarly publishing, including open access OR (b) copyright and licensing.
- Public speaking experience evidenced by a list of workshops, presentations, and/or talks conducted in libraries, professional conferences, and/or other academic or research settings (should be listed in candidate’s curriculum vitae).

DURATION OF POSITION
The initial appointment will be full-time appointment. Non-temporary appointments to the Librarian Series at UCSC are offered as potential career or career status as appropriate (see Article 4 D. Terms of Service of the UC-AFT labor contract). In accordance with policy, the selected candidate will undergo the Librarian Peer Review process where their performance will be reviewed and assessed. The Librarian Peer Review outcomes will determine the candidate’s suitability to receive career status and to move through the ranks.
