Position description

Kresge College at the University of California, Santa Cruz (UCSC) invites applications for the Director of the Kresge Speaker Series. Under the supervision of the Kresge College Provost, the speaker series director will oversee the Kresge Core Plenary Sessions (fall quarter) and the Media and Society Lecturer Series (winter and spring quarters). The “Media and Society Series” will be the name of the whole series, from the standpoint of public promotion and the charge of the series is to connect Kresge’s academic mission with the larger community in which it exists—including Kresge affiliate faculty and alumni—and more broadly, to link Kresge’s academic dialogue with public dialogue. The Media and Society Series will be open to the academic community and the public.

The director will be responsible for communications and outreach with Kresge faculty, students, and alumni, in the planning of the Fall Plenary Series, which is associated with the Kresge Core Course (KRSG 1). Additionally, the director will oversee the Media and Society Committee, which is responsible for the following activities: promoting the existing speaker series and the planning of the subsequent year’s series, identifying and recruiting distinguished guests, and collaborating with other campus units in co-hosting the series guests.

SALARY
Commensurate with qualifications and experience.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
A Master’s degree or higher (or equivalent foreign degree) in Social Sciences (in relevant fields such as Anthropology, Community Psychology, Sociology of media or education), Cultural Studies, Media Studies or Media Technologies, Humanities (in fields relevant to media, education, contemporary literature), or the Arts (in fields relevant to contemporary culture or media) at the time of application.

DURATION OF POSITION
Initial appointment will be 25% for one year, with the possibility of reappointment. Should the hiring unit propose reappointment; a review to assess performance will be conducted. Reappointment is also contingent upon the availability of funding.
