The Electrical and Computer Engineering department at the University of California, Santa Cruz (UCSC) invites applications for the position of Postdoctoral Scholar-Employee under the direction of Professor Nobuhiko Kobayashi. The selected candidate will design and conduct highly specialized and advanced experiments using various thin film deposition techniques based on chemical vapor deposition and physical vapor deposition, conduct structural and optical analysis of resulting thin film structures made of metallic and dielectric thin films using such analytical tools as microscopy, diffractometry (e.g., scanning electron microscopy and x-ray diffractometry), and a range of optical characterization tools (e.g., spectroscopic reflectometry and ellipsometry). The selected candidate is also expected to: (1) troubleshoot and customize experimental tools to meet various research needs; (2) establish experimental protocols and procedures and in some cases designing new protocols in order to conduct experiments; (3) disseminate scientific findings by publishing results in scientific journals and presenting at conferences; assume general responsibility for operations of the laboratory; (4) provide mentoring and guidance to graduate and undergraduate students; (5) conduct studies of related literature and research to support the design and implementation of projects and development of reports, ensuring conceptual relevance, comprehensiveness, and currency of information; (6) conceptualize and conduct short-term experiments and research activities in support of research projects, ensuring consistency with established methodological approaches and models, adherence to project timelines, and completeness of documentation; (7) communicate with external team members to share progress and research activities ensuring that relevant information and issues are captured in as comprehensive and timely manner as possible.

Applicants with post-baccalaureate expertise in developing deposition processes using atomic layer deposition and in analyzing structural and optical properties of dielectric and metallic thin films are strongly encouraged to apply.

SALARY
Commensurate with qualifications and experience. Minimum annual salary rates are made based on the individual’s Experience Level, which is determined by the number of months of postdoctoral service at any institution. BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
Ph.D. (or equivalent foreign degree) in Materials Science and Engineering, Applied Physics, or Electrical Engineering.

MAXIMUM DURATION OF SERVICE IN A POSTDOCTORAL TITLE
Postdoctoral Scholar appointments are full-time; the initial appointment is for a minimum of one year, with the possibility of reappointment. Reappointment will be contingent upon positive performance review and availability of funding. The total duration of an individual’s postdoctoral service may not exceed five years, including postdoctoral service at any institution. Under limited circumstances, an exception to this limit may be considered, not to exceed a sixth year.
