Description

The Department of Earth and Planetary Sciences at the University of California, Santa Cruz (UCSC) invites applications for a Hydrogeology lab/field specialist. Under the direction of Andrew Fisher, the Hydrogeology lab/field specialist will successfully work independently and collaborate regularly with students, faculty, and staff from a wide range of social and cultural backgrounds; participate in assessment of sites being considered for managed recharge (using computational, field and lab methods); prepare field equipment for sampling of sediment and water; collect and process field samples; measure discharge in channels; conduct laboratory analyses; manage data files; prepare and update standard operating procedures for field/lab work; install and maintain computer software; maintain databases; prepare and print presentation materials; organize supplies and equipment; and operate power tools. Based on the incumbent’s experience with the aforementioned duties, the Lab/Field Specialist will train students to successfully execute them as well. This position will include occasional long days which will include carrying equipment and supplies (up to 50 lbs) to/from a field vehicle, collecting field samples and data, and moving across uneven ground (with or without accommodation).

Applicants with experience in soil and fluid sample collection, processing, and analysis; conducting grain size analysis by laser diffraction; using a laser total station; programming and downloading data loggers; using geographic information systems; operating four-wheel drive vehicles and power tools; and/or bilingual fluency in English and Spanish are strongly encouraged to apply.

The position requires the incumbent to demonstrate consistently strong communication skills (both written and verbal).

ACADEMIC TITLE
Junior Specialist

SALARY
$44,500 to 47,400 annually, commensurate with qualifications and experience

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
B.S. (or equivalent foreign degree) in Geology/Earth Science at the time of application and one year of post-degree, professional research experience in hydrogeology.

POSITION AVAILABLE
Appointment will begin as soon as October 1, 2020.

DURATION OF POSITION
Initial appointment will be 100% time for twelve months. Reappointment may be considered contingent upon the availability of work and appropriate funding.
