Position description

The Department of Molecular, Cell, and Developmental Biology at the University of California, Santa Cruz (UCSC) invites applications for a Protease Inhibitor Specialist. Under the direction of Professor Jordan Ward, the Protease Inhibitor Specialist will drive a research project exploring the role of a C. elegans Kunitz domain protease inhibitor in molting. The position will involve genetic characterization of this protease inhibitor and its role in molting, determining its localization through fluorescent microscopy, and identification of the substrates of the protease. The position will also involve supporting Ward lab operation working with undergraduates, maintaining and freezing strains, and supporting reagent requests. The candidate must be able to critically read scientific literature, and work effectively both independently and in teams.

Applicants with expertise in the endosomal trafficking pathways, identification of protease inhibitor substrates, and familiarity with lysosome biology are strongly encouraged to apply.

SALARY
Commensurate with qualifications and experience.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS

  • BA/BS (or equivalent foreign degree) in Biology or a related discipline at the time of application.
  • A minimum of one year of university-level, post-degree research experience with C. elegans genetics, microscopy, and genome editing.
  • Experience with advanced molecular biology, including Gibson cloning, Sap Trap cloning, and basic molecular techniques (PCR, DNA purification).

POSITION AVAILABLE
Appointment will begin as soon as October 1, 2020

DURATION OF POSITION
Initial appointment will be full time for one year. Reappointment may be considered contingent upon the availability of work and appropriate funding.
