Description

The Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry at the University of California, Santa Cruz (UCSC) invites applications for a Junior Specialist position. Under the direction of Research Professor Phillip Crews, the Junior Specialist will work with a research group that is focused on the exploration of sponge and marine Gram-negative microbial secondary metabolites to isolate and characterize new and known compounds. In support of several funded federal grants, the Specialist will participate in research on the application of marine natural products chemistry to new molecule discovery. Duties will include executing bioorganic analytical procedures, using NMR and MS methods for both data collection and interpretation, and extracting broth cultures and sponge materials. The incumbent will be required to maintain experimental notebooks, contribute information to lab databases, exchange data with biological screening collaborators, interface closely with the UCSC Chemical Screening Center, and perform some laboratory maintenance duties. The position also requires contributions to data analysis and experimental design, assembling and analyzing relevant literature data, and contributing to technical reports and/or grant proposals. There will be opportunities for the Junior Specialist to disseminate information such as, giving scientific talks, working with undergraduate students, and providing co-authorship on manuscripts.

Applicants with any of the following areas of expertise are strongly encouraged to apply: a command of Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy and Mass Spectrometry methods, expertise in organic chemistry, and/or experience with the literature of marine natural products chemistry.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS

  • A bachelor’s degree (or equivalent foreign degree) in organic chemistry or a related field at the time of application.
  • A minimum of one year of laboratory experience working with natural products from marine invertebrates and microorganisms.

DURATION OF POSITION
Initial appointment will be part time (50 – 60%, based on available funding) for a period of 12 months. Reappointment may be considered contingent upon the availability of work and appropriate funding.
