The Ping Group at the University of California, Santa Cruz (UCSC) invites applications for an Assistant Project Scientist of condensed matter and material theory. Under the direction of Assistant Professor Yuan Ping, the Project Scientist will: 1) develop theory and implement code for open quantum dynamics with many-body interactions; 2) apply advanced electronic structure methods developed in Ping’s group and electronic structure community to study emerging physical properties of quantum materials.

Applicants with expertise in condensed matter physics, materials theory, or physical chemistry and significant experience in any of the following areas are strongly encouraged to apply: numerical implementations for first-principles methods, and expertise in electronic structure methods for solids.

Assistant Project Scientist

Commensurate with qualifications and experience.


  • Ph.D. (or equivalent foreign degree) in physics, materials science, physical chemistry, or related field at the time of application.
  • Evidence of at least five years of experience with developing and applying first-principles electronic structure methods.

Initial appointment will be part- time at 90% for one year. Reappointment may be considered contingent upon the availability of work and appropriate funding.
