Position description

The Department of Molecular, Cell, and Developmental Biology at the University of California, Santa Cruz (UCSC) invites applications for a Research Specialist. Under the direction of Assistant Professor Shaheen Sikandar, the Research Specialist will contribute to a research program in breast cancer stem cells and normal epithelial stem cells. Duties will include supporting human cell culture activities, microscopy, flowcytometry and animal work such as maintaining transgenic mouse lines and genotyping. The Research Specialist will be responsible to maintain the lab inventory and safety records, interpret data, and write lab protocols. The selected candidate will be expected to stay up-to-date with the scientific literature in the field and contribute to manuscripts, presentations, and grant proposals as needed. This position will require the incumbent to employ excellent attention to detail, demonstrate the potential to independently design and execute experiments, and successfully work as a member of a diverse, interdisciplinary research team.

Applicants with any of the following are strongly encouraged to apply: an M.S. or M.A. degree (or equivalent foreign degree) in molecular biology, cancer biology, stem cell biology, cell biology, or a related field; expertise in mouse handling (breeding, genotyping, mouse tumor models); experience with mammalian cell culture, and lentiviral work; and experience with flowcytometry.

SALARY
Commensurate with qualifications and experience.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS

  • B.S. or B.A. degree (or equivalent foreign degree) in molecular biology, biochemistry, cell biology, cancer biology, or a related field, at the time of application and a minimum of two years of post-baccalaureate research experience using molecular and cell biology techniques in a research laboratory.
  • Experience using general molecular and cell biology techniques, including PCR/RT/PCR/qPCR, mammalian cell culture, immunofluorescence, microscopy, flowcytometry and western blotting.

Initial appointment will be full‐time for one year. Reappointment may be considered contingent upon the availability of work and appropriate funding.
