Position description

The Department of Molecular, Cell, and Developmental Biology at the University of California, Santa Cruz (UCSC) invites applications for a Junior or Assistant research specialist. Under the direction of Assistant Professor Upasna Sharma, the research specialist will contribute to a research program focused on studying transgenerational inheritance of environmental effects (https://sharmalab.sites.ucsc.edu/). Duties will include performing mouse husbandry (including mouse breeding, genotyping, and maintenance of colony) and assisting with various laboratory techniques, including but not limited to PCR, gene editing, embryo microinjections and recombinant protein expression. The selected candidate will be expected to stay up-to-date with the scientific literature in the field and contribute to manuscripts, presentations, and grant proposals as needed. This position will require the incumbent to employ excellent attention to detail, demonstrate the potential to independently design and execute experiments, and successfully work as a member of a diverse, interdisciplinary research team.

Applicants with any of the following are strongly encouraged to apply: an M.S. or M.A. degree (or equivalent foreign degree) in biology, genetics, molecular biology, biochemistry, cell biology, or related field at the time of application; experience in mouse husbandry, cloning maintenance, and genotyping.

SALARY
$44,500– $57,800 annually, commensurate with qualifications and experience.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS

  • B.A. or B.S. degree or higher (or equivalent foreign degree) in biology, genetics, molecular biology, biochemistry, cell biology, or related field at the time of application.
  • Evidence of training in basic molecular biology techniques, including but not limited to: nucleic acid isolation and quantification, recombinant DNA techniques, and protein extraction and analysis.

DURATION OF POSITION
Initial appointment will be full‐time (100%) for one year. Reappointment may be considered contingent upon the availability of work and appropriate funding.
