Position description

The Environmental Studies Department at the University of California, Santa Cruz (UCSC) invites applications for a research specialist in Critical Studies of Groundwater Governance. Under the direction of Professor Flora Lu, the research specialist will contribute to an interdisciplinary, multi-institutional and international research effort funded by the NORFACE and Belmont Forum Transformations to Sustainability Joint Research Program titled, “Transformations to Groundwater Sustainability: Joint Learnings from Human-Groundwater Interactions.” This program brings together scholars from across the world, which includes hydrologists, anthropologists, sociologists, ecologists, geographers, practitioners, and engineers from and working in India, Tanzania, Morocco, Algeria, Peru, Sweden, US, UK and Netherlands. UCSC is the institutional home of the US portion of the grant, which is committed to centering community-based local approaches, action research and joint learning, and feminist methodologies.

The major goals of our research and international collaboration are:

  1. To investigate the processes by which various stakeholder groups navigate the 2014 Sustainable Groundwater Management Act and illuminate the political ecology of groundwater governance, agricultural land use, farm labor and immigration, state environmental politics, and environmental equity and justice.
  2. To explore cross-cultural and international understandings of sustainability by unpacking the multiple meanings of sustainability operationalized in California policy and practice, and comparing and contrasting these findings with our international project collaborators.
  3. To research the colonial and contemporary manifestations of the California Dream as an imaginary of hydrological innovation and modernity and how this imagery has traveled to other countries and served as an influential narrative for development.
  4. To develop a creative pedagogical approach based on the systematic documentation of diverse ‘groundwater practices,’ providing student-researcher opportunities to engage in interdisciplinary collaborations with groundwater scholars from diverse places and intellectual traditions.

We seek a Research Specialist who will contribute to data collection; mentoring of student interns and graduate students; co-authorship of publications, conference and other presentations; and facilitating workshops and conversations with the international team. Applicants with expertise in critical race, feminist, anti-colonial studies and California history as well as collaborative and community-engaged research methodologies are strongly encouraged to apply. This is an outstanding opportunity for scholars looking for additional financial sources in addition to their own teaching and research commitments, who seek academic collaboration to learn and write about pressing issues at the human/environment interface.
