Position description

The Educational Partnership Center (EPC) under the Division of Undergraduate Education at the University of California, Santa Cruz (UCSC) invites applications for COSMOS Faculty Instructor(s). The California State Summer School for Mathematics and Science (COSMOS) program is a four-week summer residential program for high school scholars with demonstrated interest and achievement in math and science who are interested in exploring post-secondary STEM education and careers. Under the direction of Dr. Shaowei Chen, COSMOS Faculty Director, the COSMOS Faculty Instructors are responsible for developing a challenging yet achievable curriculum in a STEM field.

Candidates should apply individually, though the program will work with the selected candidate(s) to identify a co-instructor when the upcoming summer program’s clusters are determined (each cluster has two faculty instructors).

The curriculum should span four weeks, with approximately six hours of academic activities per day split between the two instructors. Depending on the nature of the course contents, the syllabus typically includes a combination of lectures, demos, labs, field trips, mini projects, etc.. The syllabus will be subject to review and approval by the COSMOS faculty director. COSMOS instructors are expected to lead the academic efforts of the cluster: teach, mentor, interact, and encourage students to learn throughout the four weeks, and guide the students through a culminating research project to present at the end of the program. COSMOS instructors are also expected to attend the opening and closing day activities and they will need to be willing and able to provide instruction online if necessary.

Applicants with expertise in STEM subject matter and/or secondary education are strongly encouraged to apply.
