Position description

The Music Department at the University of California, Santa Cruz (UCSC) invites applications for an Assistant (tenure-track) rank position in the field of electronic/electroacoustic music composition, with possible additional expertise in instrumental/vocal compositions and/or music theory.

We encourage nationally and internationally recognized applicants from a diverse spectrum of 21st-century compositional approaches who are: prepared to provide instruction in a variety of classroom settings; capable of mentoring doctoral students with varying backgrounds and practices; and qualified to contribute to the Music Department’s newly redesigned undergraduate curriculum, which offers three concentrations of study--Western Art Music, Global Musics, and Contemporary Practices.

Other desirable qualifications may include but are not limited to: original and innovative work contributing to the field of music technology; work that effectively connects research and musical practices within and beyond the university; and familiarity with a variety of music software and music programming languages for system design and implementation.

The Department of Music at UC Santa Cruz has declared an active commitment (https://music.ucsc.edu/news/initiatives-and-commitments-toward-racial-justice) to efforts in the promotion of racial justice, both within our community and across our disciplines. We welcome candidates who can demonstrate a commitment to supporting and advancing the scholarship and creative work of Black, Brown, indigenous communities, women, and that of other groups historically marginalized and under-represented in higher-education careers. Through our curriculum and our hiring priorities, we strive to cultivate diverse knowledge, social and cultural equity, and a more representative university environment.

The Arts Division supports faculty research through the Arts Research Institute http://artsresearch.ucsc.edu/ari/; the campus supports research and teaching with grants awarded by the Committee on Research, the Committee on Teaching, and other groups.

The campus operates on a schedule of three 11-week quarters per academic year. In accordance with the department's workload policy, music faculty members are required to offer the equivalent of 4.5 five-unit courses per year. In addition to teaching, music faculty advise and mentor students; actively engage in creative work and research; and actively undertake administrative service for the department, affiliated college, and University.

The ability to contribute significantly to graduate education and the mentoring of graduate students is highly desirable. The successful candidate must be able to work with students, faculty and staff from a wide range of social and cultural backgrounds. We are especially interested in candidates who can contribute to the diversity and excellence of the academic community through research, teaching, and service.
