Position description

The Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry at the University of California, Santa Cruz (UCSC) invites applications for a junior specialist. Under the direction of Dr. Carrie Partch, the junior specialist will execute an independent research project involving molecular biology and work with recombinant proteins, including protein expression and purification utilizing fast performance liquid chromatography (FPLC) and analysis of proteins using a variety of techniques, including protein crystallography, circular dichroism spectroscopy, enzymatic assays and quantitative binding assays.

The position will require the junior specialist to troubleshoot experiments and perform tasks in a clean, organized, methodical, and analytical manner; successfully work independently and as part of a team with faculty and students; and complete some lab duties (e.g., ordering supplies, making common buffer stocks).
Applicants with expertise and demonstrated experience in protein expression, purification and crystallization, and crystal optimization with experience in structure determination by crystallography are strongly encouraged to apply.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS

  • B.S. or B.A. degree (or an equivalent foreign degree) in biochemistry, molecular biology, chemistry, or a related field at the time of application.
  • A minimum of one year of full-time research experience obtained post degree.
  • Experience in designing and executing experiments in the context of a supervised project.
  • Experience in standard molecular biological techniques for cloning and site-directed mutagenesis.
  • Experience in recombinant protein expression and purification by FPLC techniques, including expertise with E. coli expression systems and use of autoclaves, incubator/shakers, hoods, and other common equipment.
  • Experience with protein crystallography, including screening and crystal optimization.

DURATION OF POSITION
Initial appointment will be full‐time for one year. Reappointment may be considered contingent upon the availability of work and appropriate funding.
