Salary range: Commensurate with qualifications and experience.
Percent time: Full-time (100%)
Anticipated start: As soon as possible after initial review of the applications.
Position duration: Initial appointment will be for one year. Reappointment may be considered contingent upon the availability of work and appropriate funding.

Position description

The Kim Neuroscience lab in the Department of Molecular, Cell, and Developmental Biology at the University of California, Santa Cruz (UCSC) invites applications for a research specialist. Under the direction of Assistant Professor Euiseok Kim, the research specialist will be responsible for mouse colony management, including mouse weaning, breeding, and genotyping. Duties will include mouse brain stereotaxic surgery for viral injections, setting up and running histology pipelines including mouse perfusions, tissue sectioning, immunohistochemistry, in situ hybridization, taking fluorescent images under microscopes, and collecting and analyzing the resulting data. The research specialist will contribute to research projects by maintaining basic lab reagents for molecular biology and histology, participating in writing manuscripts, giving presentations, and assisting with grant proposals. The incumbent will also be required to perform nominal lab management duties, such as keeping safety records and managing lab orders. This position will require the candidate to prioritize accuracy, successfully collaborate with other lab members, and employ excellent problem-solving, interpersonal communication, and critical thinking skills.

Applicants with experience with mouse breeding and colony maintenance; familiarity of cell culture; proficiency with MATLAB and/or Simulink; expertise in molecular biology techniques (cloning and PCR); and/or experience with immunohistochemistry are strongly encouraged to apply.

Qualifications

Basic qualifications (required at time of application)

B.S. or B.A. degree (or an equivalent foreign degree) in neuroscience, molecular, cell, and developmental biology, biochemistry, or related discipline.
