Position title: Jordan Ward Lab: Research Specialist (Junior Specialist)
Salary range: Commensurate with qualifications and experience.
Percent time: Full-time (100%).
Anticipated start: As soon as possible after initial review of the applications.
Position duration: Initial appointment will be for one year. Reappointment may be considered contingent upon the availability of work and appropriate funding.

Position description

The Department of Molecular, Cell, and Developmental Biology at the University of California, Santa Cruz (UCSC) invites applications for a research specialist. Under the direction of Professor Jordan Ward, the specialist will drive a research project exploring the role of a C. elegans Kunitz domain protease inhibitor in molting. The position will involve genetic characterization of this protease inhibitor and its role in molting through RNAi and mutant generation, determining its localization through fluorescent microscopy, and identification of the protease inhibitor substrates. The position will also involve supporting Ward lab operation through training undergraduates, maintaining and freezing strains, and supporting reagent requests. The candidate must be able to critically read scientific literature, and work effectively both independently and in teams.

Applicants with expertise in the auxin-inducible degron system, Kunitz domain protease inhibitors, endosomal trafficking pathways, identifying protease inhibitor substrates and lysosomes are strongly encouraged to apply.

Qualifications

Basic qualifications (required at time of application)
  • BA/BS (or equivalent foreign degree) in Biology.
  • A minimum of one year of university-level, post-degree research experience with C. elegans genetics, microscopy and genome editing.
  • Experience with advanced molecular biology, including Gibson, cloning, Sap Trap cloning, and basic molecular techniques (PCR, DNA purification).
