Position overview

Position title: Cortez Lab: Research Specialist (Junior - Assistant Specialist)
Salary range: $46,800– $60,700 annually. Commensurate with qualifications and experience (see rank qualifications at https://apo.ucsc.edu/policy/capm/602.330.html#D).
Percent time: Full-time (100%).
Anticipated start: As soon as possible after initial review of the applications.
Position duration: Initial appointment will be for one year. Reappointment may be considered contingent upon the availability of work and appropriate funding.

Position description

The Department of Molecular, Cell, and Developmental Biology at the University of California, Santa Cruz (UCSC) invites applications for the Cortez Lab Research Specialist position. Under the direction of Assistant Professor Valerie Cortez, the research specialist will contribute to a research program focused on enteric viruses and gut immunity by assisting in laboratory operations and maintenance. Duties will include ordering supplies, maintaining instruments, supporting cell culture and mouse colony maintenance, as well as planning and performing experiments and interpreting data. The research specialist will also manage chemical inventory and biosafety records. The selected candidate will be expected to stay up-to-date with the scientific literature in the field and contribute to manuscripts, presentations, and grant proposals as needed. This position will require the incumbent to employ excellent attention to detail and successfully work as a member of a diverse, interdisciplinary research team.

Applicants with any of the following areas of expertise are strongly encouraged to apply: experience with cell culture and virus propagation; demonstrated experience with animal husbandry; and/or laboratory management.

Qualifications

Basic qualifications (required at time of application)
  • B.S. or B.A. degree (or equivalent foreign degree) in molecular biology, microbiology, cell biology, or a related field.
  • Experience using general molecular and cellular biology techniques, including: nucleic acid extraction and quantification, PCR/RT/PCR/qPCR, blot analysis, and cell culture.
