The Department of Molecular, Cell, and Developmental Biology (MCDB) at the University of California, Santa Cruz (UCSC) invites applications for the position of Bioinformaticist Project Scientist. The project scientist will work extensively with and be supervised by Professor Jeremy Sanford. The Sanford lab currently consists of a team of six postdoctoral scientists, graduate students, and research associates. We interact extensively with the numerous chromatin and RNA labs in the MCDB department, members of the UCSC Genome Browser team, and the bioinformatics community at UCSC. The bioinformaticist’s primary role will be to provide data processing, mapping, and assembly support to laboratories within the MCDB department.
The major duties of the position include the following: manage, analyze, display, and compare high throughput sequencing data such as CLIP-seq, ChIP-seq, Cut& Run, and MNase-seq to identify or develop appropriate computational algorithms and approaches for answering our biological questions; assist with experimental design and basic statistical comparisons between samples; implement and manage third party software, and to a limited extent, modify software for specific data analysis needs; train researchers and students in basic data analysis and assist with data displayed on the UCSC genome browser; work closely with scientists on their research projects, understanding the scientific questions being addressed, and make significant bioinformatic contributions.
The successful candidate must be analytical, articulate, interactive, able to learn and integrate technical information quickly, and have a strong commitment to quality and leading bioinformatic practices. The position will require the project scientist to demonstrate independence and self-motivation in a team environment along with the ability to study and assimilate technical structure, data, and requirements of genome analysis software.
Strong communication skills are essential to this position, as the incumbent will be expected to work effectively with other experts on campus and elsewhere, help write papers and grants, and provide oral presentations locally and at conferences.
Although not required, experience with the programming languages Python, Perl and/or R is desired.

Ph.D. (or equivalent foreign degree) in computer science, statistics, bioinformatics, or related field.
A minimum of ten years’ professional experience relevant to the advertised position.
Experience with biological databases and knowledge of bioinformatics methods and applications.
Experience working with C. elegans.
