Position description

The Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology at the University of California, Santa Cruz (UCSC) invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant or tenured Associate Professor position in Evolutionary Biology. We encourage applications from biologists working in all areas of evolutionary biology and using empirical and/or theoretical approaches.

UCSC offers unique advantages for evolutionary biology research. Our core facilities include a newly constructed academic building on the Coastal Science Campus, recently constructed plant growth facilities, renovated marine vertebrate facilities, shared-use molecular biology and microscopy facilities, and sequencing services through the UCSC Genomics Institute. Our location provides easy access to the UC Natural Reserve system, comprising 41 reserves throughout California, as well as myriad terrestrial, freshwater, and marine habitats. We have a close partnership with the NOAA Southwest Fisheries Science Center, which is co-located on the Coastal Science Campus. The EEB department prizes experiential learning in the field and lab.

The successful candidate should demonstrate the necessary research and publishing experience to develop a high caliber research program in evolutionary biology that is capable of attracting ongoing extramural funding. The successful candidate will also show evidence of an ability to contribute effectively to instruction at the undergraduate and graduate teaching levels, mentor students and postdoctoral associates in research, and contribute more broadly to the university and the profession. The successful candidate will also show commitment to fostering diversity, equity, and inclusion in all aspects of professional life. UC Santa Cruz is a Hispanic-Serving Institution with a high proportion of first-in-family students and is renowned for fostering student social mobility. UC Santa Cruz values diversity, equity, and inclusion and is committed to hiring faculty who will work to support these values. We welcome candidates who understand the barriers facing women and minorities who are underrepresented in the classroom and in higher education careers (as evidenced by life experiences and educational background), and who have experience in equity and diversity with respect to teaching, mentoring, research, life experiences, or service towards building an equitable and diverse scholarly environment.

The chosen candidate will be expected to sign a statement representing that they are not the subject of any ongoing investigation or disciplinary proceeding at their current academic institution or place of employment, nor have they in the past ten years been formally disciplined at any academic institution/place of employment. In the event the candidate cannot make this representation, they will be expected to disclose in writing to the hiring dean the circumstances surrounding any formal discipline that they have received, as well as any current or ongoing investigation or disciplinary process of which they are the subject. (Note that discipline includes a negotiated settlement agreement to resolve a matter related to substantiated misconduct.)
