Position title: Deep/Cold Water Corals Technician (Junior Specialist)
Salary range: $46,800 to $49,800 annually, commensurate with qualifications and experience.
Percent time: Part-time (80%)
Anticipated start: As soon as possible after initial review of the applications.
Position duration: Initial appointment will be six to nine months in duration. Reappointment may be considered contingent upon the availability of work and appropriate funding.

Position description

The Department of Earth and Planetary Sciences (eps.ucsc.edu) at the University of California, Santa Cruz (UCSC) invites applications for a Deep/Cold Water Corals Technician. Under the direction of Adina Paytan, the technician will successfully work independently and collaborate regularly with students, faculty, and staff from a wide range of social and cultural backgrounds; which will require that the technician consistently demonstrate strong communication skills.

The technician will participate in assessment of corals’ growth rate and calcification (using computational, field, and lab methods) and prepare coral and water samples for major and trace element analyses (column chemistry, dilution, preparing standards, and micro-drilling). They will also conduct laboratory analyses using ICP-OES, ICP-MS, IRMS, CT scanner, manage data files including Qa/QC, and prepare and update standard operating procedures for field and lab work. The technician will install and maintain computer software, maintain databases, and prepare and print presentation materials, organize supplies and equipment, operate power tools, and train others in these tasks. The position’s fieldwork includes collecting field samples and data and monitoring the samples as they get analyzed. The nature of the position will require the technician to work occasionally in the early morning hours and/or in adverse weather conditions; hike in difficult terrain; and carry heavy field equipment (approximately 50 pounds) to and from field vehicles (with or without accommodation).

Qualifications

Basic qualifications (required at time of application)

B.S. (or equivalent foreign degree) in geology, earth science, geochemistry, minerology, or a closely related field as well as one year of post-degree, professional research experience in hydrogeology, oceanography, or geochemistry.
