Position title: Arribere Lab: Junior Specialist - Assistant Specialist
Salary range: $46,800 - $54,900 annually, commensurate with qualifications and experience.
Percent time: Full‐time (100%)
Anticipated start: As soon as possible after initial review of the applications.
Position duration: Initial appointment will be for one year. Reappointment may be considered contingent upon the availability of work and appropriate funding.

Position description

The Department of Molecular, Cell, and Developmental Biology at the University of California, Santa Cruz (UCSC) invites applications for a research specialist position. Under the direction of Assistant Professor Joshua Arribere, the selected candidate will contribute to a research program in quality control of gene expression, focusing on RNA and protein metabolism and should have a command of genetics, basic biochemistry, and molecular biology. Duties will include generation of C. elegans strains (via mutagenesis, CRISPR/Cas9, crossing), nucleic acid extraction and analysis (e.g., deep sequencing library preparation), ribosomal preparation and analysis (e.g., ribosome footprinting), and protein analysis (immunoblotting, protein fluorescence). The specialist’s duties will also include general lab management responsibilities such as ordering supplies, implementing laboratory safety program requirements and oversee undergraduate students. The position will require the candidate to employ excellent communication skills, effectively plan and execute research projects, and successfully work both independently and collaboratively.

Qualifications

Basic qualifications (required at time of application)
  • B.A. or B.S. degree (or foreign equivalent) in molecular biology, cell biology, genetics, biochemistry, computational biology, or related field.
  • A minimum of one-year of laboratory research experience.
  • Experience with molecular biology techniques, including but not limited to the following: PCR, recombinant DNA technology, extraction and analysis of nucleic acid and ribonucleoprotein complexes, and immunoblotting.
