Salary range: Commensurate with qualifications and experience.
Percent time: Full-time (100%)
Anticipated start: As soon as possible after initial review of the applications.
Position duration: Initial appointment will be for one year with the possibility of reappointment. Reappointment is also considered contingent upon the availability of work and appropriate funding.

Position description

The Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry at the University of California, Santa Cruz (UCSC) invites applications for a junior specialist. Under the direction of Professor John MacMillan, the junior specialist will carry out research in the area of biological characterization of botanicals. The work will utilize high-throughput techniques for gene expression and high-content imaging to characterize botanical fractions and pure compounds. Successful applicants will have the opportunity to work at the frontier of data-driven approaches in the field of natural products. This highly collaborative position will work as part of a team with chemists, bioinformaticians and molecular biologists to address critical questions around botanicals. The Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry has state of the art facilities in NMR, MS, and a recently renovated high-throughput screening facility with state-of-the-art robotics and screening technologies.

Applicants with any of the following areas of expertise are strongly encouraged to apply: expertise in PCR, experience using robotics, and/or experience working with a large number of samples.

B.S. degree (or equivalent foreign degree) in biology, molecular biology, biochemistry, or related field.
