Position title: Kimmey Lab Postdoctoral Scholar
Salary range: Commensurate with qualifications and experience. Minimum annual salary rates are made based on the individual’s Experience Level, which is determined by the number of months of postdoctoral service at any institution. Percent time: Ful-time (100%)
Anticipated start: As soon as possible after initial review of the applications. Ph.D. must be in hand at time of the initial appointment.
Position duration: MAXIMUM DURATION OF SERVICE IN A POSTDOCTORAL TITLE
Postdoctoral Scholar appointments are full-time; the initial appointment is for a minimum of one year, with the possibility of reappointment. Reappointment will be contingent upon positive performance review and availability of funding. The total duration of an individual’s postdoctoral service may not exceed five years, including postdoctoral service at any institution. Under limited circumstances, an exception to this limit may be considered, not to exceed a sixth year.

Position description

The Department of Microbiology and Environmental Toxicology at the University of California, Santa Cruz (UCSC) invites applications for a postdoctoral scholar, who will work under the direction of Assistant Professor Jacqueline Kimmey. [The Kimmey Lab](https;www.kimmeylab.com) focuses on the pathogen Streptococcus pneumoniae with a specific interest in understanding mechanisms by which the circadian clock influences cellular and immune responses to infection. The lab uses genetic, cellular and molecular biology approaches leveraging a variety of techniques including in vitro (bacterial culture and eukaryotic tissue culture) and in vivo models (murine and zebrafish). Applicants are not expected to have expertise in all of these areas, but must be conceptually and technically proficient in common “wet lab” molecular biology techniques such as PCR, electrophoresis, protein analysis, and sterile technique. The postdoctoral scholar will be expected to lead an independent project which requires excellent experimental and organizational skills, the ability to communicate scientific material (verbally and written) and work well in a collaborative environment.

Multiple positions are currently available and specific project focus will be tailored to postdoctoral candidate’s area of expertise and interest. Relevant skills include experience with microbial culture, tissue culture, murine models, zebrafish models, immunology, pathogenesis, infectious disease, BSL2 biosafety, high throughput screening, bacterial genetics, eukaryotic genetics, cell biology, or biochemistry (purification, fractionation).

Applicants with specific expertise in any of the following areas are strongly encouraged to apply:

  • Innate immune sensing and signaling (such as TLR, NLR, inflammasome, etc), eukaryotic cell biology.
  • Microbiology, including bacterial genetics and biochemical approaches. Experience with Streptococcus pnuemoniae preferred, but not required. Experience with other genetically tractable bacterium and a commitment to learn Streptococcal system is sufficient
  • Circadian biology at a cellular or molecular scale (molecular clock, genetics, entrainment, etc).

Ph.D. (or equivalent foreign degree) in Microbiology, Immunology, Cell Biology or a related field. Ph.D. must be in hand at the time of the initial appointment.
