Position title: Junior Specialist – Stone Lab
Salary range: Commensurate with qualifications and experience.
Percent time: Full-time (100%)
Anticipated start: As soon as possible after the initial review of applications.
Position duration: Initial appointment will be for one year, with the possibility of reappointment. Should the hiring unit propose reappointment; a review to assess performance will be conducted. Reappointment is also contingent upon the availability of funding.

Position description

The Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry (https://science.ucsc.edu/department/chemistry/) at the University of California, Santa Cruz (UCSC) invites applications for a junior specialist. The Stone Research Group is broadly interested in the structure and function of RNA in complex biological systems and all current projects have direct biomedical significance. Under the direction of Professor Michael D. Stone, the junior specialist will use molecular cloning, biochemical, and bioinformatic techniques to study structure-function relationships of essential cellular RNAs. Duties will also include assisting with everyday operations of the research lab, including but not limited to: ordering and stocking supplies, maintaining laboratory stock reagents, and training undergraduate researchers. In addition, the junior specialist will participate directly in ongoing research projects, working in collaboration with PhD candidates and postdoctoral fellows.

Applicants with research experience in basic molecular biology and biochemistry techniques, as well as general laboratory safety awareness are strongly encouraged to apply.

Qualifications

Basic qualifications (required at time of application)

BS or BA (or an equivalent foreign degree) in biochemistry, chemistry, biology, or a related field.
