Position description

The Ecology and Evolutionary Biology Department of the University of California, Santa Cruz invites applications for a qualified instructor to teach an entirely field based upper-division course in ecological methods and conservation: California Ecology and Conservation. The course will be offered in the Spring, and Fall each academic year. This course will also be offered during Summer Session, which will be a separate and distinct appointment. Each offering consists of an intensive seven week course held entirely in the field at UC Natural Reserves (see the following website: http://nrs.ucop.edu/fqp/index.htm), and constitutes a full-time appointment. Instructors are expected to spend the majority of this time in the field with the students, including living on-site. Outstanding candidates with experience in teaching college level courses in ecology, biology, botany, field methods, zoology, natural history, and field-based courses in the natural sciences are encouraged to apply.
The successful candidate will be responsible for co-teaching the course with one other instructor. The course will be assigned a TA and two course logistical support staff to assist with food preparation, equipment and gear organization, etc.

During winter quarter when the course in not being taught, the candidate will be assigned miscellaneous duties that may include the following: course coordination on specific reserves for summer course trips; development and compilation of additional course materials; development and maintenance of course website; service as undergraduate mentor for students (e.g. assisting students with scientific writing of data generated during courses); reviewing applications of students wanting to enroll in the course; planning future projects and field trips; interfacing with other universities and UC campuses to promote the course; conducting logistical course preparations (e.g. reserving field sites, arranging vehicle rentals, ordering instructional supplies/equipment, etc.); hiring logistical support staff for future course offerings. The percentage for winter quarter will vary depending upon the duties assigned.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS: Ph.D. or equivalent foreign degree in Biology or related field expected to be conferred by September 1, 2015. Demonstrated university level teaching experience.

SPECIAL CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT: Selected candidate will be required to pass a criminal history background check and will be required to complete Title IX (Sexual Harassment) training every two years.
