Position description

The Department of Earth and Planetary Sciences at the University of California, Santa Cruz (UCSC) invites applications for the position of Junior Specialist in Hydrogeology, under the direction of Professor Andrew Fisher. Applicants will contribute to the research of the Hydrogeology group, including work with Geographic Information Systems (GIS), computer modeling of surface water and groundwater flows, design and completion of field percolation tests, measurement of discharge in channels, collection and analysis of soil samples, collection and analysis of environmental fluid samples, contributing to hydrogeology databases and records, and maintaining order in Hydrogeology lab spaces and vehicles. This position will include collaborating in lab work and fieldwork, including occasional long days and carrying equipment to/from a field vehicle and moving across uneven ground.

RANK: Junior Specialist II

SALARY: $39,444-42,680 annually, commensurate with qualifications and experience.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS: B.S. in Earth Science (or an allied field) in hand at time of appointment; minimum of one year of prior experience working in an Earth Sciences lab; experience with: collecting hydrologic field data and samples, geographic information systems, and installing and maintaining computer software; and knowledge of lab EH&S procedures and requirements.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: Experience with: (a) a Beckman-Coulter LS320 Particle Size Analyzer, (b) ArcGIS 10.3, (c) EndNote reference software, (d) preparation of files for use with PRMS, (e) mini-Price (USGS style) stream flowmeter, (f) laser totaling station, (g) running data loggers (configuration, launch, recovery). A valid California driver's license and ability to drive a pickup truck and van. Ability to carry equipment and supplies (up to 50 lbs) to/from a vehicle and over uneven ground in the field, with or without accommodations.

POSITION AVAILABLE: 8/1/16.

TERM OF APPOINTMENT: This is a one-year appointment, with the possibility of extension through 9/30/17. Should the hiring unit propose reappointment; a review to assess performance will be conducted. Reappointment is also contingent upon availability of funding.
