Position description

The Institute of Marine Sciences at the University of California, Santa Cruz, in collaboration with Dr. Steven Bograd and Dr. Elliott Hazen, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) National Marine Fisheries Services, seek an Assistant / Associate Specialist with strong programming and/or statistical skills in support of ongoing and new projects analyzing top predator distribution, behavior, and ecology in relation to oceanographic and trophic processes. The position is at the NOAA/SWFSC laboratory in Monterey, California. The incumbent should have the ability to: write code in R, MatLab or other programing languages, perform statistics and data analysis, and the ability to be highly collaborative and familiar with multiple complex data types (e.g. netcdf), synthesize results into mansucripts and project reports. Responsibilities include contributing to research projects, developing code for fisheries relevant projects, academic development of statististical and environmental data processing code, helping write project reports for funding agencies, and serving as primary or co-author on peer reviewed manuscripts.

SALARY: Minimum salary $43,428, commensurate with qualifications and experience.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS: MS (or equivalent foreign degree) in Statistics, Computer Science, Oceanography, Ecology, Biology, Earth Sciences, or Environmental Studies; and one year of experience working with coding to analyze spatial and temporal (oceanographic and ecological) datasets.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: Experience developing research analyses; experience with analytical software packages (R, MatLab, ArcGIS, Python) and statistical analysis of spatial and temporal data; experience with analytical tools for large data sets ("big data") to provide higher levels of interpretive information useful for environmental analysis and oceanographic application. Knowledge of relevant HDF4, HDF5, NetCDF3 and NetCDF4 file formats and data processing capabilities.

POSITION AVAILABLE: As soon as possible (negotiable).

TERM OF APPOINTMENT: Initial appointment is for 1 year. Should the hiring unit propose reappointment, a review to assess performance will be conducted. Reappointment is also contingent upon availability of funding.
