Position description

The California State Summer School for the Mathematics and Science (COSMOS) program at the University of California, Santa Cruz (UCSC) invites applications for the position of Faculty Director, under the direction of Executive Director of the Educational Partnership Position.

COSMOS is a four week summer residential program for high school scholars with demonstrated interest and achievement in mathematics and science offered at four UC campuses. Students work side-by-side with outstanding university researchers and faculty, exploring advanced topics that extend beyond the typical high school curriculum. COSMOS courses are hands-on and lab-intensive, emphasizing current research underway at UC campuses.

The Faculty Director has oversight of the academic aspect of the COSMOS program, including purview of innovation and leadership, developing new clusters, evaluation and improvement of existing clusters, assisting with fundraising opportunities, and collaboration between COSMOS and campus faculty and other potential STEM collaborators. Using their knowledge on STEM research and innovation at UCSC, they will draw upon their faculty connection to be able to develop new and dynamic clusters that will draw students from around the state and will set our campus’ program apart statewide.

REPORTING STRUCTURE: The COSMOS Faculty Director is the academic head of COSMOS and reports directly to the Vice Provost and Dean of Undergraduate Education.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS: Candidates must be a member of the UCSC Academic Senate and have a record of leadership experience.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: Experience teaching a COSMOS Cluster. Tenured member of the academic senate with an exceptional record of scholarship and service related to STEM K-16 programs. Experience in high school summer science programs and residential programs.

POSITION AVAILABLE: Immediate opening

TERM OF APPOINTMENT: November 1, 2016 – August 31, 2017. Compensation is based on the underlying faculty appointment, plus a stipend in the amount of $5,000 (fiscal year basis). In addition, the Faculty Director will be provided with 1/9th summer salary and normally receive one course release per year.
