Position description

The Department of Environmental Studies at the University of California, Santa Cruz (UCSC) invites applications for a position in Coastal Governance, preferably with expertise in US policy, at the assistant professor level (tenure-track). We seek candidates with demonstrated teaching and research expertise in the institutional dimensions of resource management at the land-sea interface (including coastal terrestrial, freshwater, and/or marine systems). Scholarly traditions could include politics, law, common property governance, or natural resources management as applied to conservation, land use, or food systems. Applicants should demonstrate a clear record of excellence in both fundamental and applied research. Prior collaboration with natural scientists is desirable.

The successful candidate will be expected to: (1) engage with and complement existing departmental and campus expertise in fields that include ecology, conservation science, spatial analysis, land-use change, climate science, agroecology, environmental policy, political ecology, and environmental economics; (2) foster collaborations outside the university and/or with interdisciplinary teams; (3) develop a strong research program providing opportunities for post-doctoral researchers, graduate, and undergraduate students; and (4) teach undergraduate and graduate courses, including one course per year in the proposed M.A. Program in Social Science and Public Policy. The successful candidate will be expected to work with students, faculty, and staff from a wide range of social and cultural backgrounds. We are especially interested in candidates who can contribute to the diversity and excellence of the academic community through research, teaching, and/or service.

RANK: Assistant Professor

SALARY: Commensurate with qualifications and experience; academic year (9-month) basis.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS: Ph.D. or equivalent foreign degree (expected to be conferred by August 2017), and demonstrated experience in research and university-level teaching.

POSITION AVAILABLE: July 1, 2017, with academic year beginning September 2017. Degree must be conferred prior to December 31, 2017 for employment beyond that date.
