Position description

The Department of Molecular, Cell, and Developmental Biology (https://mcd.ucsc.edu/) at the University of California, Santa Cruz (UCSC) invites applications for a position under the direction of Assistant Professor Joshua Arribere. The selected candidate will contribute to a research program in quality control of gene expression, focusing on RNA and protein metabolism and should have a command of genetics, basic biochemistry, and bioinformatics. Duties will include generation of C. elegans strains (via mutagenesis, CRISPR/Cas9), nucleic acid extraction and analysis (e.g., deep sequencing library preparation), ribosomal preparation and analysis (e.g., ribosome footprinting), and protein analysis. The position will require the candidate to employ excellent communication skills; effectively plan and execute research projects; and successfully work both independently and collaboratively.

We have a preference for candidates who possess any or all of the following preferred qualifications: Experience with deep sequencing library preparation; experience with sucrose gradient fractionation, experience with immunoblotting; experience with the nematode C. elegans as a model system.

SALARY: $38,127 - $50,244 annually, commensurate with qualifications and experience.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS: B.A. or B.S. degree (or foreign equivalent) in molecular biology, cell Biology, genetics, biochemistry, computational biology or related field; a minimum of two years laboratory research experience; and experience with molecular biology techniques, including but not limited to: PCR, recombinant DNA technology, extraction and analysis of nucleic acid and ribonucleoprotein complexes, and immunoblotting.

POSITION AVAILABLE: As soon as possible after the initial review of applications.

TERM OF APPOINTMENT: Initial appointment is full-time for one year, with the potential of reappointment. Should the hiring unit propose reappointment; a review to assess performance will be conducted. In addition, reappointment is contingent upon availability of funding.
