The Ecology and Evolutionary Biology Department (https://www.eeb.ucsc.edu/ ) of the University of California, Santa Cruz invites applications for a qualified instructor to teach an entirely field based upper-division course in ecological methods and conservation: California Ecology and Conservation. The course will be offered in the spring, summer, and fall quarters. Each course offering consists of 7 weeks entirely in the field at UC Natural Reserves (see the following website for general course details http://www.ucnrs.org/teaching/cec.html), which constitutes a full-time appointment. Outstanding candidates with experience in teaching college level courses in ecology, biology, botany, field methods, zoology, natural history, and field-based courses in the natural sciences are encouraged to apply.

Fall, spring and summer duties: The successful candidate will be responsible for co-teaching the course with one other instructor. The course will be assigned a TA and two course logistical support staff to assist with food preparation, equipment and gear organization, etc.

Winter duties: During winter quarter when the course in not being taught, the candidate will be assigned miscellaneous duties (which constitute a full-time appointment) that may include the following: coordinate courses on specific reserves for summer course trips; develop and compile additional course materials; hire logistical support staff for future course offerings; develop program and website content; serve as undergraduate mentor for students (e.g. assist students with scientific writing of data generated while in the field); review student applications; plan future projects and field trips; work with other universities to promote the course; handling various course logistics (e.g. coordinate vehicles, pay invoices, etc.); and travel to other UC Campuses and UC Natural Reserves to promote the course.

RANK: Lecturer

SALARY: Minimum annual salary $61,946; commensurate with qualifications and experience.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS: Ph.D. (or equivalent foreign degree) in Biology or related field and a demonstrated record of university-level teaching experience.
