The Center for Research in Open Source Software (CROSS) under the Department of Computer Science in the Baskin School of Engineering at the University of California, Santa Cruz (UCSC) seeks outstanding candidates for the position of Project Scientist to lead an on-going project on elastic databases in the cloud. CROSS (https://cross.ucsc.edu/) aims to turn graduate-level research prototypes into successful software projects with vibrant user and developer communities. To meet this goal, the CROSS team uses a combination of teaching, research, and incubation. Under the direction of CROSS Director Carlos Maltzahn, the Project Scientist will head a CROSS incubator project on dynamic elasticity for relational databases in the cloud and on query optimization that exploits flexible, dynamic mapping to improve performance. Responsibilities will include leveraging development technologies and infrastructure for developing the elastic database and building an open-source software community participating in the project’s efforts. The successful candidate will make significant research contributions, possess a proven track record of designing and building innovative production-level systems, and will build and maintain a diverse community of open-source software contributors for the project. We are particularly interested in candidates who have experience leading incubator-stage open-source software projects and building their communities. Experience in database systems design optimized for cloud environments is also desired.
