Description

DESCRIPTION

The Center for Biomolecular Science and Engineering (transitioning into the Genomics Institute Organized Research Unit, https://ucscgenomics.soe.ucsc.edu/)) at UC Santa Cruz (UCSC) invites applications from outstanding scientists for the position of Assistant Research Scientist with the Computational Genomics Laboratory (CGL), under the direction of Assistant Professor Benedict Paten. We seek a self-motivated, creative scientist interested in precision medicine and the impact genomics is having on health care. The candidate should be experienced in biological data analysis and have extensive programming knowledge to develop computational systems for clinical genomics and precision medicine. In the course of research, the incumbent will define protocols for sharing individual’s genetic, genomic and phenotypic data; design and implement algorithms to infer the impact of genetic or genomic variation on human health; and, develop public and protected visualization and analysis portals to share these raw or derived data with the larger community. It is expected that the incumbent, as part of the CGL, will work with external research groups and scientific consortia to develop data sharing standards and processes, and integrate external data into internal analysis pipelines and visualization portals.

The incumbent will be expected (i) to provide technical leadership and direction to small senior-level software development teams, (ii) to work with graduate and undergraduate students, (iii) to interface with the UCSC Internal Review Board and other regulatory bodies, and (iv) be expected to apply for and serve as principal investigator on grants, contracts, and private external funding. The successful candidate will be highly articulate and have demonstrated ability to collaborate with scientists, software engineers and students in developing novel computational tools or resources. We are particularly interested in identifying candidates with extensive knowledge of cancer genetics and genetic variant interpretation.

The incumbent will be expected to publish in scientific journals and present findings at scientific meetings. Our exceptional collegiality and interdisciplinary collaborations make UCSC an excellent environment for an innovative scientist who can benefit from and contribute to the rapid growth in the sciences and engineering at UCSC.

Specific projects in which the candidate will play a significant role include the following: the Global Alliance for Genomics and Health, which is working on open standards for communicating genomics information in both research and health care contexts; the BRCA Challenge, which is working on developing safe methods for sharing genetic data. The ideal candidate will be able to work productively across all of these projects, which share a common management structure on the UCSC side.
