Position description

The Vice Provost and Dean of the Division of Graduate Studies reports to the Campus Provost/Executive Vice Chancellor and assumes major responsibility for enhancing graduate and postdoctoral education at UC Santa Cruz. In coordination with the other senior members of the Provost’s Office and the Divisional Deans, the Graduate Dean plays a leadership role in all aspects of graduate education, as well as supporting postdoctoral training, on the Santa Cruz campus and provides strategic, academic, and administrative direction to the Graduate Division.

This position is vitally important to the future of UC Santa Cruz and the appointee will have a significant role in shaping the future of the campus. The Graduate Dean will take a leadership position in building and strengthening the graduate programs. As a member of the Campus Provost’s team, the Graduate Dean will be conversant with all aspects of the campus’s growth and will represent and advocate all issues of graduate education in campus planning.

TERM OF APPOINTMENT: The initial appointment will be for a five-year appointment, with the possibility of renewal. Salary is commensurate with experience and qualifications.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:
• Candidate must be a member of the UCSC Academic Senate with tenure or security of employment (SOE)
• Demonstrated experience in leadership

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
• Experience in team building, communication, and interpersonal skills
• Ability to communicate and work effectively with diverse campus constituents (faculty, students, staff, administrators) and external partners
• Ability to exercise discretion and sound judgment in dealing with confidential and sensitive issues
• Ability to provide leadership and vision for future academic growth and development
• Substantial administrative experience
