Position description

The Department of Biomolecular Engineering (https://www.soe.ucsc.edu/departments/biomolecular-engineering) at the University of California, Santa Cruz (UCSC) invites applications for the position of Junior Specialist, under the direction of Professor Rebecca DuBois. The Junior Specialist will support and assist in research that uses protein engineering and structural biology approaches to understand the mechanisms of human virus infection and the mechanisms of protective human immunity. Responsibilities may include designing and cloning of DNA plasmids, recombinant protein expression in diverse cell lines, multi-step protein purification and optimization, generation of stably-transfected insect cell lines, protein quality analyses, and protein crystallization. The candidate will also make scholarly contributions to the research program through reading of primary literature, preparation and/or editing of scientific manuscripts and/or lab meeting presentations. The candidate will be able to learn new techniques, implement protocols with attention to detail, have strong written and verbal communication skills, exercise good time management and problem-solving skills, and consistently work effectively in a team environment.

Commensurate with qualifications and experience

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
Bachelor’s degree (or equivalent foreign degree) in Bioengineering, Molecular Biology, Biochemistry, or related scientific field at the time of application, and at least three years of biological wet lab research experience during and/or after obtaining the degree.

DURATION OF POSITION
Initial appointment will be full‐time through June 30, 2019, with the possibility of reappointment. Should the hiring unit propose reappointment; a review to assess performance will be conducted. Reappointment is also contingent upon the availability of funding.
