Position description

The Department of Molecular, Cell, and Developmental Biology (https://mcd.ucsc.edu) at the University of California, Santa Cruz (UCSC) invites applications for a Research Specialist. Under the direction of Assistant Professor Olena Morozova Vaske, the Research Specialist will contribute to a research program in pediatric cancer genomics (https://treehousegenomics.soe.ucsc.edu/) by helping launch the molecular biology component of the program. Duties will include supporting human cell culture activities, performing nuclear acid extraction and analysis, planning and performing experiments, and helping develop lab protocols for NGS library construction and sequencing. The Research Specialist will also manage chemical inventory and safety records, interpret data, and write lab protocols. The selected candidate will be expected to stay up-to-date with the scientific literature in the field and contribute to manuscripts, presentations, and grant proposals as needed. This position will require the incumbent to employ excellent attention to detail, demonstrate the potential to independently design and execute experiments, and successfully work as a member of a diverse, interdisciplinary research team.

Applicants with any of the following are strongly encouraged to apply: an M.S. or M.A. degree (or equivalent foreign degree) in molecular biology, biochemistry, cell biology, biophysics, or a related field; expertise in RNA sequencing; experience in NGS technologies (exome sequencing, whole genome sequencing, amplicon, and/or hybridization-based gene panel sequencing); experience with mammalian cell culture; and/or demonstrated experience setting up a new NGS workflow.

SALARY
$49,700 – $67,900 annually, commensurate with qualifications and experience.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS

  • B.S. or B.A. degree (or equivalent foreign degree) in molecular biology, biochemistry, cell biology, biophysics, or a related field, at the time of application.
  • A minimum of two years of post-baccalaureate research experience using molecular biology techniques in a research or clinical laboratory.
  • Experience using general molecular biology techniques, including: nucleic acid extraction and quantification, PCR/RT/PCR/qPCR, capillary electrophoresis, CRISPR-Cas9, blot analyses, and dot and reverse dot blots.

DURATION OF POSITION
Initial appointment will be full‐time for one year, with the possibility of reappointment. Should the hiring unit propose reappointment; a review to assess performance will be conducted. Reappointment is also contingent upon the availability of funding.
