Position description

The Center for Biomolecular Science and Engineering (transitioning into the Genomics Institute Organized Research Unit, https://ucscgenomics.soe.ucsc.edu/) at UC Santa Cruz (UCSC) invites applications for the position of Assistant Research Scientist, working under the direction of Associate Director Benedict Paten. We seek a self-motivated, creative scientist with research expertise in the genomics of complex, repetitive sequences and/or human genome assembly. Our exceptional collegiality and interdisciplinary collaborations make UCSC an excellent environment for an innovative scientist who can benefit from and contribute to the rapid growth in the sciences and engineering at UCSC.

The successful candidate will be expected to perform the following duties:
(i) provide technical leadership and direction to a small senior-level technology development team;
(ii) work with graduate and undergraduate students and postdoctoral scholars;
(iii) apply for and serve as principal investigator on grants, contracts, and private external funding;
(iv) publish in top-tier scientific journals and present findings at international scientific meetings;
(v) collaborate with scientists, laboratory scientists, software engineers and students in developing novel genomics tools, protocols and resources;
(vi) advance long-read genome assembly strategies, working on both experimental, laboratory protocols and associated computational methods;
(vii) lead development of repeat representations in human genome reference maps, and in particular the representation of centromere and satellite sequences; and
(viii) coordinate collaborations to develop novel genomics tools, protocols and resources.

Commensurate with qualifications and experience.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS

  • Ph.D. or equivalent foreign degree in bioinformatics, computational biology, genomics, or a related discipline at the time of application.
  • Minimum two-years’ experience in biological data analysis and programming experience with developing computational systems for genomics and precision medicine.
  • Minimum two-years’ experience with molecular biology, cell biology and sequencing technologies.
  • A demonstrated record of publishing in scientific journals and presenting at scientific meetings.

DURATION OF POSITION
Initial appointment will be full time through June 30, 2020, with the possibility of reappointment. Should the hiring unit propose reappointment; a review to assess performance will be conducted. Reappointment is also contingent upon the availability of funding.
