Description

The Digital Scholarship Commons (DSC) at the Library of the University of California, Santa Cruz (https://library.ucsc.edu/) invites applications for a Digital Scholarship Librarian who will work under the direction of the DSC Director. The DSC is a growing program that provides student access to technology and learning through experimentation in a low stakes environment. We foster student engagement with digital research in and out of the classroom and support faculty growth through pedagogy and research support.

We seek a motivated individual who will contribute to an existing and robust suite of programs aimed at integrating digital methods into teaching, research methods, and individual experimentation. The DSC works closely with the Digital Initiatives and Special Collections departments within the library as well as with faculty inclined towards developing, enhancing, and growing digital expertise in their classroom and in their research. While our current program has strengths in digital exhibits, visualization, and integration of three dimensional (3D) and virtual reality (VR) resources, we invite candidates with experience in any field of digital research and instruction to apply. We value a candidate’s ability to interact meaningfully with our program and demonstrate how their particular skill set would integrate into and expand the work of the DSC. We are seeking candidates who would welcome the opportunity to weave their own interests in digital research and instruction into the work of the DSC program.

The incoming Digital Scholarship Librarian will contribute to the intellectual work of the program by supporting our internal growth, community building, and by partnering with faculty to develop teaching assignments and research projects informed by current critical digital theory. The incumbent will help develop and run one-time workshops for faculty, graduates, and undergraduates and will serve as a partner in long-term projects. The Librarian will also be involved in the day-to-day running of our spaces, which support the UCSC student community by providing a high-end computer lab, the VizLab with a VR suite, and equipment checkout geared toward student media creation. The Digital Scholarship Librarian will also have the following duties:

  • Advise and train students, faculty, and staff on digital scholarship tools and techniques
  • Participate in professional development activities to maintain subject and methodological expertise in emerging digital tools and theory
  • Foster community engagement with digital scholarship by hosting and presenting relevant speakers, seminars, and workshops as part of DSC programing
  • Develop and extend connections between the library and University faculty, researchers, and students engaging in digital scholarship
  • Lead outreach and awareness activities for faculty, graduate students, and partners
  • Work to maintain a vision for balancing innovation with sustainable, supportable services
  • Identify opportunities to develop programming within the DSC

Applicants with any of the following qualifications or professional experience are strongly encouraged to apply: demonstrated expertise in digital exhibits, 360 video, VR development, or data visualization; ability to establish strong rapport with multiple constituencies in order to effectively collaborate and build partnerships; research or other creative activities that engage with critical digital theory; experience teaching digital methods in an academic setting; experience working in dynamic environments where new services are tested, evaluated, and adapted; demonstrated interest and experience in “critical making”; ability to analyze and provide guidance on a wide range of tools and technologies; demonstrated ability to successfully initiate, track, and manage multiple projects; and/or excellent communications skills and the ability to listen, negotiate, compromise, and adapt.

SALARY
$49,165 - $69,550, commensurate with qualifications and experience.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS

  • An ALA-accredited MLS or MLIS degree (or equivalent foreign degree) at the time of application; or Master’s degree (or equivalent foreign degree) in humanities or humanistic aspects of information science at the time of application.
  • At least four (4) years’ experience working in an academic library or research setting.
  • Experience with contemporary digital scholarship practices and digital scholarship/humanities centers.
  • Experience with at least one methodology used in digital humanities and/or digital scholarship.
  • Experience with digital scholarship critical theory.
  • Experience with EITHER research that incorporates critical digital theory OR teaching digital methods in an academic setting.

This appointment will be full-time. Non-temporary appointments to the Librarian Series at UCSC are offered as potential career or career status, as appropriate (see Article 4 D. In accordance with policy, the selected candidate will undergo the Librarian Peer Review process where his/her performance will be reviewed and assessed. The Librarian Peer Review outcomes will determine the candidate’s suitability to receive career status and move through the ranks.
