Position description

The Department of Molecular, Cell, and Developmental Biology (https://mcd.ucsc.edu/) at the University of California, Santa Cruz (UCSC) invites applications for a research specialist position, under the direction of Assistant Professor Upasna Sharma. The research specialist will use genomic approaches to support and assist research studying how exposure of an organism to various environmental conditions influences sperm epigenome and phenotypes in the future generation. Duties will include performing mouse husbandry (including mouse breeding, genotyping, and maintenance of colony), genome editing using CRISPR in embryonic stem cells and mouse embryos, and using basic molecular biological techniques such as PCR, cloning, and recombinant protein expression. The position will require the Research Specialist to learn new techniques and implement protocols with excellent attention to detail.

Applicants with any of the following areas of expertise are strongly encouraged to apply: experience in mouse reproductive biology (including sperm and oocyte isolations); experience with in vitro fertilization and embryo micromanipulation; demonstrated record of authorship or co-authorship of one or more peer-reviewed publications; and/or a minimum of two years post-baccalaureate molecular biology laboratory experience.

SALARY
Starting at $42,100, commensurate with qualifications and experience.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS

  • B.A. or B.S. degree or higher (or equivalent foreign degree) in biology, genetics, molecular biology, biochemistry, cell biology, or related field at the time of application.
  • A minimum of one year of post-baccalaureate laboratory experience working with mice (such as mouse husbandry and colony maintenance).
  • Evidence of training in basic molecular biology techniques, including but not limited to: nucleic acid isolation, recombinant DNA techniques, and PCR.

DURATION OF POSITION
Initial appointment will be full‐time for one year, with the possibility of reappointment. Should the hiring unit propose reappointment; a review to assess performance will be conducted. Reappointment is also contingent upon the availability of funding.
