Position description

The Department of Anthropology (https://anthro.ucsc.edu/) at the University of California, Santa Cruz (UCSC) invites applications for an Assistant Professor in Environmental Archaeology. The successful candidate will employ laboratory-based methodologies to explore the longue durée history of human-environment interactions broadly defined. The specific methodological focus of the position is open, but we prefer a scholar who will help us build on existing department resources in zooarchaeology, or develop a new focus in paleoethnobotany. Desirable foci include, but are not limited to, the archaeology of subsistence, foodways, domestication, and climate change. This position will contribute to our existing focus on the archaeology of the colonial encounter and its legacies in West Africa, the Caribbean, and Western North America. The successful candidate is expected to develop a research program, advise graduate students in their research area, advise, develop and teach courses within the undergraduate and graduate curriculum, and perform university, public, and professional service. Additionally, the successful candidate will demonstrate the potential to develop synergies with Cultural and Biological Anthropology faculty and students within the department (particularly in the fields of Environmental and Molecular Anthropology).

We welcome candidates who understand the barriers facing women and minorities who are underrepresented in higher education careers (as evidenced by life experiences and educational background), and who have experience in equity and diversity with respect to teaching, mentoring, research, life experiences, or service towards building an equitable and diverse scholarly environment.
