Position description

The Writing Program (https://writing.ucsc.edu/) at the University of California, Santa Cruz (UCSC) invites applications for an Advanced Assistant or Associate Teaching Professor. Within the University of California, the Teaching Professor series (Assistant, Associate, and Full Teaching Professors) is analogous to tenure-track/tenured with Senate rights and accumulation of credits toward sabbatical leave. In the Writing Program, Assistant/Associate Teaching Professors typically teach six courses in an academic year. Release time is granted for significant service opportunities and obligations, including administering the Writing Program (WP).

UCSC's WP currently has a faculty of four Teaching Professors, two Associate Teaching Professors (including an Associate Teaching Professor hired in summer 2023), and approximately 50 lecturers. We are seeking a Writing Studies/Rhetoric and Composition teacher-scholar. Area of specialty is open. The successful candidate will have training and professional experience in the field of Writing Studies/Rhetoric and Composition and will teach a range of writing courses. Alongside other Writing Program faculty, the selected candidate will serve at least one term as WP Chair in the coming years. Chair service includes additional course release.

The WP currently offers a writing curriculum to meet campus requirements, with attention to information literacy and disinformation, genre study, and rhetorical theory/practice. The program also offers writing courses for students acquiring academic English (the Multilingual Curriculum). Upper-division courses are available for aspiring writing tutors, as is a rigorous seminar for graduate students wishing to teach writing. A new Writing Minor is under review, and we ground our teaching practices in innovative best practices in the field (including, but not limited to, contract grading, directed self-placement, multiliteracies, and translingual composition). The WP is a campus leader in terms of teaching modality and offers courses in in-person, hybrid, and online formats.

The WP is an independent unit within the Humanities Division, with connections to both The Humanities Institute (THI) and the Teaching and Learning Center (TLC). The Division has a strong tradition of collaborative and interdisciplinary work and encourages applications from qualified candidates eager to extend their activities across departmental and disciplinary boundaries.

The successful candidate should have a teaching record and employment history that prepares them to work with faculty, staff, and students from a wide range of social, linguistic, and cultural backgrounds. UCSC is a Hispanic-Serving Institution (HSI) and an Asian American Native American Pacific Islander-Serving Institution (AANAPISI). Sixty-one percent of undergraduates are students of color; 35% are the first in their families to attend a four-year university. We are especially interested in candidates who can contribute to the diversity and excellence of the academic community through their teaching, scholarship, and/or service. Activities promoting equity and inclusion at UC Santa Cruz will be recognized as important university service during the faculty promotion process. More information can be found: https://apo.ucsc.edu/diversity.html

ACADEMIC TITLE
Assistant Teaching Professor, Writing Program. The Assistant Teaching Professor title confers the rights and responsibilities of membership in the Academic Senate, and it has the payroll title “Lecturer with Potential for Security of Employment (LPSOE).” An LPSOE is eligible for promotion to "Security of Employment,” which is analogous to tenure. The Associate Teaching Professor and Teaching Professor titles confer the rights and responsibilities of membership in the Academic Senate, and they have the payroll title of “Lecturer with Security of Employment (LSOE)” and “Senior Lecturer with Security of Employment (SLSOE)” respectively. LSOE and SLSOE are analogous to tenure.

The chosen candidate will be expected to sign a statement representing that they are not the subject of any ongoing investigation or disciplinary proceeding at their current academic institution or place of employment, nor have they in the past ten years been formally disciplined at any academic institution/place of employment. In the event the candidate cannot make this representation, they will be expected to disclose in writing to the hiring Dean the circumstances surrounding any formal discipline that they have received, as well as any current or ongoing investigation or disciplinary process of which they are the subject. (Note that discipline includes a negotiated settlement agreement to resolve a matter related to substantiated misconduct.)
