Position title: Assistant Researcher in Particle and Nuclear Physics Experimentation (Schumm)
Salary range: Commensurate with qualifications and experience. The posted UCSC Salary Scales set the minimum pay determined by rank and step at appointment. See the scale titled, REPRESENTED PROFESSIONAL RESEARCH SERIES FISCAL YEAR. “Off-scale salaries”, i.e., a salary that is higher than the published system-wide salary at the designated rank and step, are offered when necessary to meet competitive conditions. A reasonable estimate for this position is $87,100 -$102,900.
Percent time: The minimum percentage will be 80% time, but can be increased up to 100% if additional funding from grants is obtained.
Anticipated start: As soon as possible after initial review of the applications.
Position duration: Initial appointment will be for two years, with the possibility of reappointment. Should the hiring unit propose reappointment; a review to assess performance will be conducted. Reappointment is also contingent upon the availability of funding.

Position description

Professor Bruce Schumm in the Santa Cruz Institute for Particle Physics (SCIPP) at the University of California, Santa Cruz (UCSC) is seeking applications for an assistant researcher. The successful candidate will have expertise in solid-state fast-timing sensors and their application to particle and nuclear physics experimentation. The successful candidate will be expected to independently lead a robust program of sensor and detector-system R&D, including the development of readout systems, as well as to lead the optimization of fast-sensor-based detection systems for anticipated upcoming applications, including the Electron Ion Collider detector and advanced detection systems for future small- and medium-sized experiments.

The successful candidate will be expected to apply broadly and comprehensively for funding, including basic R&D funding, project-based funding, and SBIR grants, as they are appropriate to the research the candidate is pursuing. Finally, the successful candidate will be expected to provide significant research opportunities for both undergraduate and graduate students and contribute to the promotion of diversity, equity, and inclusion on our campus or within the field as a whole.

Qualifications

Basic qualifications (required at time of application)
  • Ph.D. (or equivalent foreign degree) in physics or a closely related field.
  • A minimum of five (5) years postdoctoral scholar research (since the degree was earned), or equivalent experience, in particle or nuclear physics experimentation, with an emphasis on instrumentation R&D and design optimization.
  • Demonstrated experience in the design, optimization and characterization of advanced sensor technologies.
  • Demonstrated experience in the design, optimization and characterization of electronic readout systems.
