Position title: AM Assistant Adjunct Professor, Associate Adjunct Professor, and Adjunct Professor
Salary range: The posted UCSC Salary Scales set the minimum pay determined by rank and step at appointment. See the scale titled, Faculty Ladder Rank Business/Economics/Engineering Fiscal Year. “Off-scale salaries”, i.e., a salary that is higher than the published system-wide salary at the designated rank and step, are offered when necessary to meet competitive conditions. A reasonable estimate for a full-time position is $115,000 -250,300.
Percent time: Variable (0-100%), the appointments’ percentage of time will depend on the level of engagement of the positions’ activities in research, teaching and service.
Anticipated start: This recruitment is valid for initial appointments effective August 2024 through August 2025. Initial appointments with effective dates outside of this recruitment period will require an alternative open recruitment.
Position duration: Appointments are typically made as fiscal year, term appointments (see CAPM 512.280 Adjunct Professor Series).

Position description

The Department of Applied Mathematics at the University of California, Santa Cruz (UCSC) invites applications for an ongoing pool of assistant adjunct professors, associate adjunct professors, and adjunct professors. Adjunct faculty members are expected to engage in research or other creative activity, teaching, and university and public service. Appointments in this series may be assigned to academic scholars currently affiliated with other universities, or to qualified individuals who are professional practitioners of appropriate distinction when such an affiliation supports the academic and professional endeavors of the department. These appointments forge closer relations between the university and other academic institutions or industry, are frequently self-funded, and involve a limited length of service. Academically qualified research or other creative personnel who contribute significantly to teaching either in formal courses or in guidance of graduate students in one or more of the areas below are encouraged to apply. The campus is especially interested in candidates who can contribute to diversity of scholarly activity and add additional dimension to the Baskin School of Engineering by complementing or augmenting our existing research strengths.

Current areas of excellence and research foci within applied mathematics: calculus, control theory, fluid dynamics, stochastic modeling, and numerical methods.

UC Santa Cruz is the University of California campus nearest to Silicon Valley and maintains close ties with local industry in the fields of applied mathematics. The campus is especially interested in candidates who can contribute to the diversity and excellence of the academic community through their research, teaching, and/or service.

  • Ph.D. (or equivalent foreign degree) in applied mathematics or a closely related field.
  • Demonstrated record of research and teaching.
