Position title: Research Specialist - Romero Lab (Junior - Associate Ranks)
Salary range: Commensurate with qualifications and experience (see section D. Qualifications of the CAPM 602.230 Specialist Series. The UCSC Salary Scales set the minimum pay determined by rank and step at appointment. See the scale titled, *Represented Specialist Series Fiscal Year *. A salary that is higher than the published system-wide salary at the designated rank and step, is offered when necessary to meet competitive conditions. A reasonable estimate for this position is $53,100 - $85,000.
Percent time: Full-time (100%)
Anticipated start: As soon as possible after the initial review of applications.
Position duration: Initial appointment will be for one year, with the possibility of reappointment. Should the hiring unit propose reappointment; a review to assess performance will be conducted. Reappointment is also contingent upon the availability of funding.

Position description

The Romero Lab in the Department of Molecular, Cell, and Developmental Biology at the University of California, Santa Cruz (UCSC) invites applications for one or more research specialists. Under the direction of Assistant Professor Matthew Romero, the specialists will contribute to a research program investigating skeletal muscle biology and next generation sequencing techniques using cutting edge experiments in the fields of genomics, biology and physiology.

Duties will include aiding in general lab activities such as cell culture and lab management, training new and incoming lab members on lab techniques, and working together to successfully conduct experiments. The selected candidate(s) will be expected to perform calculations for the preparation of lab solutions and reagents; have a comprehensive understanding of scientific principles; and have general computer skills and the ability to quickly learn and master basic computer programs, databases, and scientific applications. The selected candidate(s) should have strong analytical skills and excellent judgment and will be expected to stay current with the scientific literature in the field and contribute to the preparation of manuscripts, presentations, and grant proposals. This position will require excellent organizational skills and the ability to successfully work as a member of a diverse, interdisciplinary research team.

Applicants with any of the following qualifications are strongly encouraged to apply: experience with qRT-PCR, RT-PCR; experience with mammalian cell culture; experience with DNA, RNA and protein isolation methods; animal handling experience and conducting physiological experiments on animals.

Qualifications

Basic qualifications (required at time of application)
  • B.S./B.A. degree (or equivalent foreign degree) in biology, molecular biology, biochemistry, or a related field. Please be aware that you must possess the basic degree when you submit your application.
  • A minimum of one year of relevant lab experience using basic molecular biology techniques and assays (it is acceptable for the experience to be gained as an undergraduate or after the degree has been earned).
