Position title: Loerch Lab: Research Specialist ("Full" Specialist Rank)
Salary range: Commensurate with qualifications and experience. The posted UCSC Salary Scales set the minimum pay determined by rank and step at appointment. See the scale titled, Represented Specialist Series Fiscal Year. “Off-scale salaries”, i.e., a salary that is higher than the published system-wide salary at the designated rank and step, are offered when necessary to meet competitive conditions. A reasonable estimate for this position is $90,000 $98,900.
Percent time: Full-time (100%)
Anticipated start: As soon as possible after the initial review of applications.
Position duration: Initial appointment will be for three years, with the possibility of reappointment. Should the hiring unit propose reappointment; a review to assess performance will be conducted. Reappointment is also contingent upon the availability of funding.

Position description

Assistant Professor Sarah Loerch in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry at the University of California, Santa Cruz (UCSC) invites applications for a research specialist. The specialist will conduct research on fully funded projects pertaining to translational control.

Research responsibilities will include a broad range of techniques including general lab duties including biosafety management, molecular biology (recombinant DNA, and RNA techniques), protein purification and analysis, immunocytochemistry, use of fluorescence microscope (confocal and widefield), and image analysis. The candidate will train students in experimental techniques, and perform research related to active research directions in the lab. The specialist is expected to support protocol development for new assays that are not yet established in the lab.

This position will require the specialist to have excellent interpersonal skills, be able to follow instructions and protocols, independently perform experiments, and act in accordance with the lab's commitment to increasing diversity, equity, and inclusion in scientific research. Additionally, the specialist will be required to generate figures and document and communicate results for publications and presentations.

Candidates who have demonstrated skills in organization and working methodically and analytically are encouraged to apply. A competitive candidate will have a broad range of experience and a strong publication track record.

Qualifications

Basic qualifications (required at time of application)
  • A minimum of ten years of research experience in molecular biology, cell biology, biochemistry, or a field relevant to the advertised position.
  • Experience with protocol development for new assays.
  • A demonstrated record of peer-reviewed, scientific publications.
  • A demonstrated record of collaborative work experience.
  • A demonstrated record of working with and training students, postdoctoral scholars, and scientists.
